It should be noted that the cytopathologist can identify anaplastic, papillary and medullary carcinoma and lymphoma on aspiration biopsy. It is not possible on cytological smears to differentiate follicular adenomas from follicular carcinomas since the latter require identification of vascular invasion for diagnosis (see Chapter 16).
